CHENGDU — Chinese Panda Al Hin is almost as smart as she is hungry.
The 6 year old panda at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding duped her zookeepers into thinking she was pregnant. By producing more hormones, gaining weight, and acting more lethargic, Al Hin tricked everyone into thinking she had some little pandas on the way.
Researchers took action and began planning to film the first ever live broadcast of a panda birth, which sounds slightly more like the end of Anchorman than it does like a real thing.
According to Panda experts, the animals typically associate more bamboo with pregnancy, and have attempted to trick their keepers in the past.
Chengdu researcher Wu Kongju told us this:
After showing prenatal signs, the ‘mothers-to-be’ are moved into single rooms with air conditioning and around-the-clock care… They also receive more buns, fruits and bamboo, so some clever pandas have used this to their advantage to improve their quality of life.
